Portimão
First the blue sea, with its soft waves, it’s hard to choose which beach is the most beautiful! With its long stretches of golden sand and crystal-clear waters, Portimão is a combination of culture and heritage in harmony with nature.
Portimão and its municipality have more to offer. History lived in monuments. It is known for its historic centre, lively marina and proximity to several beaches. The Portimão Museum is housed in a restored 19th century cannery, with exhibitions on local history.
The church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in Gothic style, has tiles. To the south is Praia da Rocha, with its ochre cliffs in the background and the medieval fort of Santa Catarina.
Routes and walks
It will certainly be impossible to travel around the Portimão region without setting foot on the beach, but it’s worth trying to discover the charms of this land, with the Atlantic Ocean lurking in the background.
Give the beach a rest, prepare your rucksack and breathe in the fresh air while you take a stroll along the five nature trails that unveil idyllic scenery such as Ponta João D’Arens, where the rocks sculpted by erosion are home to various species of birds, or the fabulous Ria de Alvor, where the dunes allow for the existence of the salt marsh and the estuary itself, on which a great diversity of species depend, both fauna and flora, as well as the local fishing and shellfish gatherers.
Don’t forget to take a stroll through Mexilhoeira Grande, where the common landscape is agricultural, and discover the stories of our ancestors that date back to prehistoric times. Come here and follow the natural routes of the Portimão region on your own two feet, pedalling a bike or rowing a boat.
