Around the castle, erected by King Afonso III, you can see an immense landscape of traditional salt pans. Castro Marim’s connection to the salt industry goes back a long way, making it almost impossible to determine the precise date of its beginnings.
Visiting the traditional salt pans is an excellent opportunity to discover the traditional skills used for centuries to extract salt, in a perfect symbiosis between the labour of man and the will of nature.
Visitors can also meet those who make the delicate bobbin lace used to decorate tablecloths on their doorstep.
You can also see the faces of the men who, with their wise hands, weave baskets from straw and cane, reed and palm leaves, and watch them at work.
All this heritage is combined with the natural landscape of the municipality of Castro Marim, a territory with countless undiscovered charms that dazzle all those who visit it.
